My Essential Mac Applications List!

Recently I purchase the new i7 Macbook Pro this baby is a screamer!!! As most people when migrating will simply just migrate and clone everything over. I personally like to just clone the data and reinstall most of the applications. I feel it is cleaner this way… anyway this is the 4th time I am doing this and I start seeing some patterns of software I will always install! Here are the softwares:

  • 1 Password – best Password manager in the market. Also have iPhone version!
  • Adapter – free video converter, previously I use Visual Hub but is discontinued :(
  • Adium - A messenger application which support everything except Skype
  • Appigo Todo/Sync – I use TODO on my iPhone so AppigoSync is a given. If you are looking for a Todo App on iPhone… this will be the one!
  • Audacity - Been with me for YEARS since my Window days! best free audio editing app for amateur like me!
  • Dropbox – I can’t live without it now… free online 2GB storage and sync over the cloud on multiple devices!
  • Flip4Mac – give your Quicktime the power of playing WMV (window video format)
  • HandBrake – Free DVD and Video Ripper!
  • iWorks - 95% of my documents, spreadsheets and presentation is created with this killer app!
  • Mackeeper – I don’t even know where to start with this one… it is a Find my Macbook, Dropbox, HelpDesk, Cleaner, Shredder, Encryptor and many more… they charge per annum given there are some neat online functions. The offline function once you have paid is yours forever!
  • Microsoft Office 2008 - most people will say if you use iWork mainly then Neo Office or Open Office should be good enough. I beg to differ, yes those are free but is crap! MS Office 08 is actually quite decent and for verification purpose it does the job well. On top if I really need to create DOCX, XLSX,PPTX it is at least usable.
  • OmniGraffle Professional – The Visio for Mac and frankly better then Viso for PC :)
  • PhoneDisk – Free app to make your iPhone/iPad/iPod into a USB device! Get it now they are promoting it… after Sept they will charge!
  • Pixelmator - If you don’t need something as fancy or expensive as Photoshop but still will want a pretty nice application experience this one is your only option!
  • Q9 ML2 – My Chinese input method, personally I think is the best!
  • Skype - I use Skype more then MSN or Gtalk these days…
  • Snapz Pro X - Best and I seriously mean best screen photo and video software out there! If you need a good application to capture anything on screen this one is really the ONLY ONLY option!
  • Transmission – Been using it for quite some time and yes there are other client out there but for a seamless Mac experience and solidness this is the one!
  • Transmit – Previously I use Cyberduck… but I am totally in love with Transmit now! Personally it blow, squash and destroy the duck for me!
  • VLC - Free video player which plays almost anything…
  • Adobe Air - Open up lots of interesting new apps for you! such as Tweet Deck
  • CleanMyMac – Great for doing my cleaning!
  • iStats Menu – Let me monitor my mac better and the time component is something I cannot live without!
  • Onyx – Free system optimizer/organizer/tweaker
  • SMARTREPORTER- Put a menu icon on your menu bar to warn you about ur harddisk! Super important!
  • smcFanController - give you the control of the internal fan speed in your Macbook
  • The Unarchiver - Free ZIP, RAR, 7Zip and many more format extractor. It is simple and it do the job well!
  • RightZoom - I never like the default behavior of the green button on the Mac Windows… I prefer what Window does… Maximize the window and this app helps you to do so.
  • Growl – The unified notification system
  • MacFuse+NTFS 3G - Let you mount different formatted external disk
  • Perian – Completes your QuickTime!
